Where it started

Our name originally comes from Babare Bros. Shipbuilding. The shipyard was founded by Stephen Babare in the late 1890's. Stephen had immigrated to Tacoma from Croatia, bringing with him a knowledge of ship building that he passed on to his sons Nick and George. They primarily made purse-seine fishing boats but also built cargo ships to aid in the first World War. George Babare went on to start Babare Oyster Co., based out of Tacoma. He had oyster beds in several locations throughout the Puget Sound, including Dabob Bay, where we still continue his work a century later.
